Artist Statement

I was born and raised in West Bengal, India, where the rhythms of village life and the quiet dignity of its people shaped my earliest understanding of the world.

Men dressed in dhotis and kurtas, women in simple saris, and the everyday lives surrounding me became enduring sources of inspiration.

My visual language is also informed by Indian miniature painting and the folk-art traditions of Bengal.

Through these influences, I explore the relationship between inherited culture and the modern world, between material reality and spiritual longing.

At the centre of many of my paintings is an ageing couple who have spent most of their lives building security and fulfilling responsibilities.

By the time they are free to pursue their own desires, age and physical limitations stand in their way.

Unable to realise these aspirations, they retreat into an inner world shaped by memory, imagination and dreams.

Their exaggerated bodies, exposed hands and heavy limbs express both vulnerability and persistence. They reach towards their dreams, even when fulfilment remains beyond them.

This narrative emerged from witnessing the later years of my own parents. Through their lives, I came to understand that aspirations may end, but dreams sustain us.

My work brings together personal memory, cultural inheritance and contemporary experience.

Through each painting, I continue to learn, question and refine a visual language that carries something of my experience, identity and heart.
